Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the Phase-I rehabilitation of the Tk.1,542.16-crore Muhuri-Kohua Flood Control, Drainage and Irrigation Project in Parshuram upazila today.
The project aims to protect Feni from seasonal flooding while improving local agricultural irrigation and drainage. Approved by ECNEC on June 16, the initiative will rehabilitate 67.92 km of flood embankments, protect 11.73 km of riverbanks, re-excavate 83.50 km of water bodies and repair 27 irrigation structures by 2030.
The Prime Minister inaugurated the work at Kheyaghat Ghat-Muhuri Bridge around 2:17 pm and exchanged greetings with local residents. Senior government officials including Environment Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo and Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee accompanied him.
The inauguration was part of a daylong visit to the district. Earlier, the Prime Minister launched a rooftop solar power system connected to the national grid at the Fulgazi District Council Dak Bungalow. The installation forms part of a broader government effort that has added 962.5 kW of solar capacity across Fulgazi, Parshuram and Chhagalnaiya upazilas.
During a public gathering at Fulgazi Government Pilot High School, he distributed Family Cards to 510 local residents and Farmer Cards to 7,643 beneficiaries across Feni. Honorariums were also distributed to 238 local imams, muezzins, khadims and priests. He also participated in a tree-planting program at Begum Khaleda Zia Women’s College in Fulgazi.
Feni holds significant personal ties for the Prime Minister: his maternal grandfather’s ancestral home is in Fulgazi's Sreepur village and the Feni-1 constituency was repeatedly represented by his mother former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
