Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will leave Dhaka for New York tomorrow to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He is scheduled to address the general debate at UN Assembly on September 24.

Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam briefed the media today stating that Prime Minister will use the global platform to highlight Bangladesh’s renewed democratic journey and commitment to the rule of law. His speech will also focus on pressing global issues including climate change, sustainable development, youth empowerment and the Rohingya crisis.

This visit carries historic significance with marking the new government’s first appearance at the UNGA. It is also Tarique Rahman’s debut at the assembly as Prime Minister while Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister presides over the session.

The Prime Minister’s official engagements begin on September 22 with a welcome breakfast hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and followed by a reception hosted by the US President. On September 23 also he will participate in high-level meetings addressing global inequality and climate action.

A major focus of the trip will be the Rohingya crisis. The Prime Minister will host a side event urging the international community to expedite the safe repatriation of displaced Rohingyas to Myanmar. He will also address events on sea-level rise and maternal health.

On the sidelines Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will hold bilateral talks with leaders from Kuwait, Pakistan, Bhutan, Thailand, Croatia and Haiti. He is also scheduled to meet top officials from the UN, EU and World Bank.

To boost economic diplomacy Prime Minister will meet with representatives from Wall Street, Meta and other business groups to promote foreign investment and technological development in Bangladesh. He will return home on the night of September 25.
