A massive fire at one of Canada's busiest military bases in Alberta has caused deaths and injuries as the Defence Minister David McGuinty said. He has not said how many people were killed or hurt.
The fire began at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright about 210 kilometres (130 miles) southeast of the provincial capital Edmonton. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said a call for help came around 4 pm. Officials have not said what caused it, only that it followed a "serious incident."
McGuinty described the situation as "active and delicate." He said the fire was still burning on Saturday evening. "I cannot recall an incident like this in recent memory" he added. The Canadian military and the RCMP are investigating.
The Municipal District of Wainwright said strong winds spread the fire quickly. It broke through the base fence and entered the nearby district. No evacuation order has been issued. Residents have been asked to avoid the area also keep roads clear for emergency vehicles and visit the Wainwright Health Centre only for critical medical needs.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said his thoughts were with "all the brave women and men affected." Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called the fire "significant and tragic" saying it affects many military personnel. Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre thanked emergency crews and urged people to pray for Wainwright.
Saskatchewan has sent resources to help and British Columbia has offered assistance. General Jennie Carignan, chief of the Defence Staff said the welfare of troops also their families and the community remains the priority.
The base is a major Army training centre. Census data showed 1,310 military and civilian personnel stationed there in 2021 and the nearby town of Wainwright has about 6,600 residents.
More details on casualties and the cause are expected in the coming hours.
