After nearly three decades, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has regained the Mymensingh-10 (Gafargaon) parliamentary constituency in the 13th National Parliamentary Election. Young leader Akhtaruzzaman Bachchu secured victory with the party’s electoral symbol, the sheaf of paddy, marking the party’s return to the seat.
Since independence, BNP had won the constituency only twice — in 1979 and 1996. After that, the seat remained out of the party’s control for a long period. This year’s election has changed that trend.
According to the official results, Akhtaruzzaman Bachchu received 74,638 votes, while his nearest rival, independent candidate Abu Bakkar Siddiqur Rahman, secured 66,424 votes. The BNP candidate thus confirmed his victory by a clear margin.
Assistant Returning Officer N M Abdullah Al Mamun stated that the results were confirmed based on vote counts received from various polling centers. The Mymensingh-10 constituency comprises 15 unions and one municipality, with a total of 111 polling centers and 409,364 registered voters.
