The Gazipur District Administration has launched a targeted 12-week 'No Horn' campaign to curb unnecessary honking, enforce environmental laws and protect public health from escalating noise pollution.

Gazipur Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Md. Nurul Karim Bhuiyan presided over an inter-departmental planning meeting on July 29 to finalize the initiative. Emphasizing that severe noise pollution threatens both physical and mental well-being, Bhuiyan stated that transforming Gazipur into a noise-free district requires active civic cooperation alongside strict administrative enforcement.

The 12-week action plan covers government, commercial, and private transport. Key measures include enforcing strict "silent zones" around hospitals and educational institutions, attaching "silent driving" stickers to government vehicles and securing anti-honking pledges from public transport and official drivers.

To ensure compliance, the administration will deploy mobile courts and conduct specialized enforcement drives to dismantle and confiscate illegal hydraulic horns particularly from motorcycles, CNG auto-rickshaws and commercial buses. Public awareness campaigns will also target university fleets and industrial transport operators across the district.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), prolonged exposure to noise levels above 70 decibels can trigger permanent hearing damage, high blood pressure, heart disease and severe mental stress. Local officials emphasized that the campaign directly addresses these public health risks by restoring discipline to Gazipur’s roadways.
