The Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Detective Branch (DB) arrested 14 leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League and Jubo League on Sunday night. The arrests took place during a secret meeting at ‘Taif Restaurant’ on Nayabazar Bishwa Road, under Halishahar police station.
Police intervened at approximately 9:00 PM on the building's fourth floor. Authorities revealed the group had gathered to form a new platform titled ‘Sheikh Hasina Oikya Parishad.’
"We conducted the raid based on precise intelligence," said Md. Habibur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (North) of the CMP Detective Police. "Fourteen individuals were caught red-handed. Interrogations are ongoing, and we are working to track down others involved."
The operation follows a recent surge in illegal organizational activities. Protests under the Chhatra League banner were reported on April 25 near the Polo Ground, OR Nizam Road, and Karnaphuli Market. Similar activities at Ananya Residential and the Outer Ring Road had previously circulated on social media, prompting law enforcement to intensify surveillance.
Investigations suggest the group was attempting to restructure local units under the guidance of leaders currently residing abroad. Legal proceedings against the detainees are underway. Sources indicate most of those arrested are affiliated with the Chittagong North District Unit, hailing primarily from Sitakunda and Mirsarai Upazilas.
