A young man, frustrated by prolonged power outages, threatened to blow up the Paikgachha zonal electricity office in Khulna. Police arrested him within nine hours of the incident.
The accused, Debajyoti Chakraborty, made the threat over a mobile phone call to a local electricity official around 3 pm on Saturday. He was later detained from the municipal market at around 9 pm the same day.
Police said Debajyoti is a resident of Ward No. 4 under Paikgachha municipality. He was released on bail on Sunday morning.
Local residents said load shedding has worsened in recent days due to intense heat, severely disrupting daily life and work. Students, especially SSC exam candidates, are facing significant difficulties.
Paikgachha zonal electricity office official Anjan Kumar Sarkar said the area requires about 18 megawatts of electricity daily. However, only around 3 megawatts are currently allocated. In some cases, just 1 megawatt is supplied every six hours.
He added that the shortage has left authorities with limited options to improve the situation immediately.
