Police arrested 21 leaders and activists of the Awami League, Chhatra League, and Jubo League during an anti-terrorism drive in Sujanagar upazila early Friday (April 24) morning.
The arrests took place in the Mathurapur area. While law enforcement has not yet released the names and addresses of the detainees, local sources indicate they are supporters of Abdul Wahab, the former Sujanagar upazila chairman and local Awami League president.
Sujanagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Mozaffar Hossain confirmed the arrests. He stated that the raid was conducted based on a tip-off regarding planned terrorist activities. "The suspects will be sent to jail today following the completion of standard legal procedures," the OC added.
This incident follows a history of political tension in the area involving Wahab's faction. On February 2, 2025, police arrested Abdul Wahab in Mathurapur, but local party activists forcibly snatched him from a police van, injuring eight officers in the ensuing scuffle. Police subsequently rearrested Wahab three days later on February 5.
Despite his ongoing legal issues, Wahab and his followers have recently attempted to reorganize their political activities in Sujanagar.
Last Ramadan, they notably organized public Iftar gatherings. Furthermore, supporters have been seen chanting party slogans while escorting Wahab from the Pabna Judge Court premises after recent hearings.
