A local Awami League leader has cut down more than 200 banana trees of BNP leader in Indurkani, Pirojpur.

On Friday, it was learned that Md. Altaf Hossain Howlader, a resident of Dakshin Indurkani village of the upazila and BNP advisor of Indurkani Sadar Union No. 4, cut down more than 200 banana trees in the garden of the same village Awami League leader Md. Shahjahan Howlader alias Kural Shahjahan.

It is known that many of the cut trees had bananas and banana blossom. Accused Shahjahan Howlader is the vice-president of Dakshin Indurkani Ward No. 4 Awami League. He is accused of land grabbing, beating people, killing cattle, harassing women by filing false cases and making bad suggestions.

He cut down the banana trees last Thursday. Later that afternoon, the victim, Altaf Hossain Howlader, filed a general diary (GD) with the Indurkani police station.

Accused Shahjahan Howlader said, “That land is my mother’s property. I am an heir to it through inheritance. But my brother Altaf Hossain is occupying the land alone and has not given me any share. So I cut down some banana trees. If I am fined for this, I am ready to pay.”

On the other hand, the owner of the tree, Altaf Hossain Hawlader, said, “I purchased the land from my father and took possession of it and planted banana trees there. But my elder brother Shahjahan Hawlader is trying to take possession of the land by force. He has claimed the land as his own and cut down more than two hundred of my banana trees. Many of the trees had bananas and banana blossom. I have filed a general diary in the police station in this regard.”

Indurkani Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Maruf Hossain said, “I have received a written complaint regarding the cutting of banana trees. Legal action will be taken after investigation.”
