The Daganbhuiyan Upazila Administration launched a major eviction drive Tuesday morning to reclaim the Dadna Canal from illegal encroachers. The operation began at 10 a.m. following a series of ignored municipal notices.
Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) and Municipal Administrator Md. Shahidul Islam led the campaign alongside Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Shahidul Alam. The drive was supported by the Bangladesh Army, Police, and Ansar members to ensure order during the demolition of illegal structures.
For years, the Dadna Canal—once a vital waterway—has been obstructed by unauthorized buildings, leading to drainage issues and local frustration. Residents noted that while previous administrations promised action, political interference often stalled progress.
"Legal action will be taken against anyone occupying the canal or obstructing administrative work," UNO Shahidul Islam stated during the drive. He described the current interim government's term as a critical opportunity to restore the canal to its natural state.
Local business leaders and residents have expressed relief as the demolition continues, viewing the move as a long-overdue step toward environmental and urban reform. The administration has called for public cooperation to ensure the waterway remains clear.
