The Upazila administration has launched a strict drive against illegal filling work in the Shimulia Ghat area of Louhajang Upazila, Munshiganj.

On Sunday, December 28, 2025 at 4:02 pm, three people were arrested and fined under the Balumahal and Soil Management Act by a mobile court while filling and changing the category of privately owned land adjacent to the boundary wall of the Naval Police Outpost at Shimulia Ghat without the prior approval of the District Administration, Munshiganj.

According to the mobile court sources, three separate cases were filed against the arrested persons under Section 15(1) for violating Section 4(b) of the Balumahal and Soil Management Act, 2010. In each case, the court imposed a fine of Tk 50,000 on one person and Tk 10 lakh on the other two, totaling Tk 20,50,000. In default of payment of the fine, each person was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. According to the court's verdict, the convicts were immediately sent to jail.

It is to be noted that there had been anger and protests among the locals over illegal dredging and sand filling in Shimulia Ghat and Ranigaon Char for a long time. Due to this administration's campaign, the government's strict stance against illegal filling and sand trading has become clear once again.

Louhajang Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Farzana Bobby Mitu said that such campaigns will continue in the future against any illegal activities related to environmental destruction and encroachment of rivers and chars.
