A sharp rise in dengue cases has pushed government hospitals in Narayanganj to their limits also forcing facility authorities to treat overflowing patients on verandahs and corridors amid a severe shortage of beds.
At Narayanganj General (Victoria) Hospital, patients like 31-year-old Azharul Islam and Mashiur Rahman have spent days receiving treatment on the verandah floor. "There are no beds available but I have no other choice," Mashiur said.
Health officials reported 23 active dengue patients at Victoria Hospital on Thursday with 10 lying outside the overcrowded wards. Admissions at the 100-bed facility jumped to 193 in September, up from 119 in August and 35 in July. Total district cases reached 2,387 by late September, nearly matching the 2,398 recorded throughout 2025.
Although the District Civil Surgeon’s Office reports zero official dengue deaths within Narayanganj this year, multiple local residents including Rupganj land office employee Abu Siddique have reportedly died after being transferred to hospitals in Dhaka. These fatalities remain uncounted in the district's official toll.
Resident Medical Officer Dr Nazmul Hasan Bipul noted that dengue transmission now extends well beyond the monsoon season also driven by inadequate mosquito net usage and poor public awareness. Civil Surgeon Dr SM Sakhawat Hossain acknowledged the pressure on health services, "With limited beds, we cannot halt medical care. We are treating patients wherever possible."
In response the Narayanganj City Corporation has intensified insecticide spraying, awareness drives and enforcement fines. Across Bangladesh, dengue has infected over 81,000 people and claimed at least 249 lives this year.
