


The prestigious Tangail Deputy Commissioner Gold Cup Football Tournament has officially kicked off after a long hiatus, with 12 upazila teams participating in this year's competition under a home-and-away league format.
The opening ceremony was held on Saturday (July 11) and was inaugurated by State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku, MP.
Among those present at the inauguration were Tangail Deputy Commissioner Sharifa Haque (recently promoted as Joint Secretary), Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Sanjoy Kumar Mahanta, Tangail BNP President Hasanuzzamil Shaheen, officials from the district sports association, football players, local political leaders, and sports enthusiasts.
The tournament's opening match at Tangail Stadium featured Tangail Sadar Upazila against Basail Upazila.
At the same time, five other first-leg matches were played at different venues across the district:
Madhupur vs. Ghatail at Rani Bhabani Model Government High School Ground, Madhupur Dhanbari vs. Gopalpur at Suti VM Pilot Model Government High School Ground, Gopalpur Kalihati vs. Bhuapur at Ibrahim Khan Government College Ground, Bhuapur Delduar vs. Nagarpur at Nagarpur Government College Ground Mirzapur vs. Sakhipur at Sakhipur Upazila Parishad Playground Second Leg Scheduled for July 13
The second-leg fixtures will be played on Monday, July 13, featuring:
Ghatail vs. Madhupur Gopalpur vs. Dhanbari Bhuapur vs. Kalihati Tangail Sadar vs. Basail Nagarpur vs. Delduar Sakhipur vs. Mirzapur Super Six, Semi-finals and Final
The competition includes teams from all 12 upazilas of Tangail district.
The tournament schedule is as follows:
Super Six Round: Begins on July 19 Semi-finals: July 28 and July 29 Final: August 1 at Tangail Stadium
To enhance the tournament's competitiveness, each participating team has been allowed to register up to five foreign guest players.
A Historic Football Tournament Returns
The Tangail Deputy Commissioner Gold Cup has long been regarded as one of Bangladesh's most prestigious district-level football tournaments. In its golden years, renowned clubs such as Mohammedan Sporting Club and Abahani Limited regularly featured star players, attracting large crowds to Tangail Stadium.
The tournament was first introduced in 1980 by then Deputy Commissioner Md. Rezaul Islam, playing a significant role in promoting football across the district. The last edition was held in 2015, when Tangail Youth Club emerged as champions and BJMC Dhaka finished as runners-up.
After nearly a decade, the tournament has returned, aiming to revive Tangail's rich football tradition and inspire a new generation of players.
